OFFICE: A-215 Telephone: (213) 763-7151 EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND COURSES
The classes in Apprenticeship Education are offered to students who have been selected and indentured to learn a trade under agreement with the State of California Division of Apprenticeship Standards, which require attending the college for the period of indentureship. For further information about Indentured Apprenticeship - contact the Division of Apprenticeship Standards. Phone (213) 576-7745. Los Angeles Trade Technical College plays no part in the selection process. The on campus office is in Room A-215, Telephone: (213) 763-7151. Locally, the program is established, controlled, and supervised by the local joint Apprenticeship Committee (equal employer and employee representation) for each trade under standards approved by the State of California. The programs operate in accordance with the California Plan For Equal Opportunity in Apprenticeship. The apprenticeship program is a state approved and formalized industrial plan for training skilled workers. The program is encouraged and promoted nationally by the Federal Apprenticeship Law known as the Fitzgerald Act of 1937. In California the program is fostered and promoted by the California Apprenticeship Council and authorized by the Shelley-Maloney Labor Standards Act of 1939. There are two primary parts to the training of an apprentice: (1) the on-the-job training and instruction in the manipulative processes, and (2) the in-school training which involves instruction in technical subjects related to the on-the-job training. The on-the-job training involves 40 hours per week of supervised work experience and instruction. The apprentice is rotated through a series of organized and scheduled work experiences which have been planned on a sequential learning basis, and designed to develop in the apprentice, the all around skills of the trade. The State Apprenticeship Law states that state and local boards responsible for vocational education shall administer and supervise related and supplemental instruction for apprentices. Therefore, the college courses involve the apprentice in the study of technical subjects, with regular class attendance for the duration of the apprenticeship training period. An example of topics studied, which are generally applicable to a majority of trades, includes applied math and science, blueprint reading, and drawing, materials, equipment, processes, safety, etc. APPRENTICE INFORMATION CENTER: For further information about apprenticeship programs operating in California and the possibility of becoming an indentured apprentice in any trade, contact the California State Division of Apprenticeship Standards at 8th floor, Room 8000, 320 West Fourth Street, Los Angeles, California 90012. DEGREE APPLICABLE CERTIFICATES OF COMPLETION: Apprentices training under the cooperative direction of the college and Apprentice Committees for their trade may petition to receive credit in the appropriate major toward the Associate of Arts degree or the Associate of Science degree for all courses successfully completed.
